Well, it turns out there is a computer in the lobby here at the Pilgerhaus, which is literally on the Sea of Galilee. The "sea" is really a lake that runs about 13 miles long and at it's widest 8 miles across. But I can't upload my pictures yet so will simply say we were all very glad to be here.
Jerusalem is urban; here it is rural. Jerusalem is loud; here it is quiet. Jerusalem feels very foreign; here reminds me of Lake Wallenpaupack. Seriously. We sat down by the shore tonight sipping wine and watching the sun set. It was very familiar and peaceful and I am feeling badly that I can't yet post the photos. But all in due time.
On the way here we stopped at the Church(es) of the Annunciation (both of them!) in Nazareth. The Roman Catholic site is built on what is purported to have been Mary's home. The Greek Orthodox say she was at the town well when the Angel Gabriel came to visit her and so it's about a half mile up the road. Either way, Nazareth felt different from Jerusalem including these holy sites: the "exact" place seems to matter less here since Jesus spent a good bit more of his time in the streets of Nazareth and around this lake. Tomorrow we will be able to spend time around and on the lake, including some fish for lunch. We also have a chance to renew our Baptismal vows ankle-deep in the Jordan River. We will celebrate Eucharist tomorrow at the Lake and Marty will be the Celebrant and Chris will give the homily. On Wednesday we'll celebrate the Eucharist on the Mount of the Transfiguration and I'll celebrate. Very cool.
I really loved being in Jerusalem and will enjoy it when we go back. But in so many ways, I feel more connected here, surrounded by the hills of Galilee and away from the city.
