Exploring the Old City of Jerusalem

So our work today was to explore the old city: we were divided into four teams and each team assigned a main quarter to explore and then report back to the whole group. We spent the day basically and Chris and Marty and I were with Patricia and Norman and assigned the Christian Quarter. This altar can be found in Christ Church, the oldest Anglican (and in fact Protestant) Church in Jerusalem. Initially when Anglicans during the time of Queen Victoria they came to convert Jews to Christianity. So the Church is built to look like a synagogue. Notice the Hebrew symbols including the back wall which has the Ten Commandments, Apostles Creed, and Lord's Prayer all in Hebrew.
This is David's Tower, the site of an amazing archeological dig through layers of the history of Jerusalem back to the Herodian Period.

A view from David's Tower looking toward the Dome of the Rock, and beyond it to the Mount of Olives.

A "typical" street in the Christian Quarter.

I just liked the angle up into what I assume is someone's home behind that window box.

Old city meets all the 57 channels (and more) with nothing on!

Yes, it is true: Red Sox Nation knows no bounds!

The omnipresent Jerusalem cross in the foreground.

I wish I could do this one as a "scratch and sniff." The smells and sounds of Jerusalem are at least as noteworthy as what I can show you through photographs. These are, if it is not obvious in the photo, piles of spices.

The produce really is amazing, something that has come back to me from my first trip. Tomatoes that taste like tomatoes and cucumbers at every meal, including breakfast.

We entered at the New Gate and came out of the Damascus Gate which is where this picture of Chris and Martin was taken.

  1. Your pictures are awesome Rich. The sky is so blue and clear. I noticed people in the market were wearing jackets. What's the temperature?
